How Photonic Guard Made Possible the Largest Energy Storage Investment in Europe

How Photonic Guard Made Possible the Largest Energy Storage Investment in Europe

Madrid, April 16, 2026. On March 10, La Razón published news that just days later would shake the Spanish industrial landscape: Hithium Energy Storage, the Chinese giant specializing in energy storage systems, had chosen Navarra —and by extension, Spain— as its European home. Today we can tell you, in detail, how we got here and why this project goes far beyond an industrial transaction.

When Hithium Energy Storage was founded in Shenzhen in 2019, few imagined that six years later the company would make the leap to Europe precisely through Photonic Guard. But that’s exactly what happened.

The public-private Joint Venture with the Government of Navarra, articulated through Sodena, has crystallized into what is provisionally known as Hithium Spain Innovation. The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 405 million euros in initial investment
  • 700 direct jobs in the first phase, with projection to 1,000 in the second
  • Operations scheduled to begin in 2027

But the truly disruptive element is the technology. The Navarra plant will manufacture BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) based on next-generation LFP cells, with a special focus on Long-Duration Energy Storage solutions. We’re talking about systems of 6.25 MWh and native technologies for 8 hours of duration. In the world of energy storage, this isn’t evolution: it’s a generational leap.

The Human Chain That Made the Deal Possible

Everything started with a conversation. And it wasn’t just any conversation.

On Monday, March 9, at the Moncloa Palace, the following gathered together: the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez; the President of the Community of Navarra, María Chivite; the Counselor of Industry of the Foral Government of Navarra, Mikel Irujo; and the Hithium executive team, led by Dr. Jeff Wu, CEO and founder. That highest-level meeting was the missing piece to materialize a project that had been years in the making.

The achievement is the fruit of the work of the Executive Chairman and co-founder of Photonic Guard, Javier Sánchez, accompanied by Eneko Knörr as advisor and the effective collaboration with Sodena. Javier Sánchez, with more than twenty years of experience in advanced science and technology, has woven a network of relationships with the global digital and institutional ecosystem. That network of contacts, that ability to connect worlds, is what allowed Photonic Guard to act as a strategic bridge between Hithium, the Government of Navarra, and the Government of Spain.

As La Razón points out, Photonic Guard is the only European company with positive relationships with all the world’s leading governments at this time. And it is precisely that unique position that made this agreement possible.

Post-Quantum Cybersecurity: Why It’s Not an Add-On, But a Pillar

This is where our raison d’être comes in.

BESS systems are not battery warehouses. They are critical infrastructure. They are the beating heart behind hospitals, transport networks, and data centers. A cyberattack on a facility of this magnitude could trigger cascading blackouts, collapse essential services, or destabilize an entire region.

And in a world where quantum computers are ceasing to be science fiction to become a real threat, conventional cryptography becomes worthless.

Photonic Guard offers the only native photonic post-quantum protection layer on the market. QKD (quantum key distribution), QRNG (quantum random number generators), quantum cryptography, and Web3 artificial intelligence solutions resistant to quantum computers. Our technology protects the command chain, telemetry, and control protocols of these gigantic systems.

It’s not an extra. It’s the foundation on which everything else is built.

Three Pillars, One Vision

If we had to explain this project in three words, they would be these:

Sustainability. Because efficient storage is what allows renewable energy to stop being marginal and become the axis of our electrical grid.

Innovation. Because Hithium leads with high-capacity cells and 8-hour LDES solutions that have no rival in the global market.

Sovereignty. Because when we protect European critical infrastructure with post-quantum technology, we are ensuring that Europe controls its own digital destiny.

Navarra thus becomes a benchmark for green reindustrialization. Spain consolidates its position in the European energy transition. And Photonic Guard demonstrates that we don’t just protect the future: we build it.

What’s Next?

This milestone is not a destination. It’s a starting point.

We are aware that projects like this need protection from day one. If you are working in renewable energy, energy storage, or critical infrastructure, our post-quantum cybersecurity solutions can secure your operation from minute zero.

Because the future doesn’t wait. And whoever has the most advanced technology, but without protection, will be building on sand.
