The Global Payments War Will Be Photonic. And Spain Is Already Deploying the Shield.

The global financial system is about to change foundation in this decade. Three forces are pushing this transformation:

1. Payments: Central Bank Digital Currencies are coming

The ECB, the Federal Reserve, and the BIS are already working on digital stable versions of their currencies. They will be the new cornerstone of international trade. Fast, traceable, programmable.

2. Problem: A single cyberattack brings everything down

A digital euro is useless if an attack on SWIFT, SEPA, or the settlement network paralizes it. Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure are weekly occurrences. “Q-Day”, the day a quantum computer breaks RSA and ECC, would render all current cryptography wet paper.

3. Reality: The photonic race has already begun

China demonstrated photonic supremacy with Jiuzhang from USTC. Their photonic computers have been solving in minutes problems that are intractable for the best silicon supercomputer. They have the laboratory.

The difference is not who researches. It’s who deploys.
